Winter weather in Oregon can be notoriously hard to predict. It might be rainy, clear, foggy, mild, cold, snowy, or icy — or all of the above. And sometimes, we'll get all that in one day! Ultimately, if the last few years have taught me anything, it's to expect the unexpected.

This sentiment is particularly applicable to weather, and winter weather in particular. Oregon's weather is no different. Despite our relatively mild climate, just like the rest of the country, we've experienced some unprecedented extremes in weather here and there (and it seems like these events are only getting more and more common). From heat domes to atmospheric rivers to some epic ice storms, Oregon has not been spared the brunt of climate change's wrath. In my opinion, though, we tend to fare much better than many other parts of the United States, particularly in the summer and winter. That's where we really come into our own, but I digress.

Despite all the negative, tongue-in-cheek talk about our grey and rainy winter days, I love Oregon in winter, and it's certainly nice to have a sense of what kind of winter weather is in store. This is why I'm here to share the 2024-2025 winter predictions from the Old Farmer's Almanac. While things can (and will likely) change, knowing what winter weather we might be able to expect can help us all be better prepared, logistically and emotionally!

Are you ready for the 2024 winter predictions for Oregon? Be prepared for snow... but not too much of it. The Almanac is calling for a mild and dry winter this year for much of the state, save for the westernmost parts, which ought to see a mild and wet winter. We're thinking more rain than snow this time around; after some really cold winters, I think this is a welcome change!

Rain will be falling this winter, so coats and rain gear will definitely be needed. But that won't stop us from getting out and enjoying the fresh air, no matter what winter brings! According to the Old Farmer's Almanac predictions, there will be below-average snowfall — from flurries or snow storms or anything else — this winter. This winter's snowiest times are expected to be in mid-to-late November, early and late January, and mid-February. On the plus side, all that snow will make for a great season of snow sports like skiing, snowboarding, and sledding!

Consider taking advantage of a snow day by going on a snowshoeing adventure. There are plenty of wonderful winter hikes in Oregon you can take to develop a new love for this season you never had before.

Be sure to keep an eye on weather forecasts so you don't get stuck in the snow — or ice. It's a good idea to have an ice scraper and brush in your car as well. Expect some foggy mornings and evenings, as well as gray, rainy days. Dress warm, always, and be ready for anything; the Farmer's Almanac is fun, but there's no substitute for actual meteorological forecasts. Weather can change on a dime, so be weather-ready no matter what!
