Black Mesa is one of the most unique areas to visit in Oklahoma because of its dramatic landscape. It's not only the highest point in the state at 4,973 feet, but it has some of the most unique and spectacular topography in the Sooner State. From rugged rock formations to layers of black lava to hidden caves, Black Mesa is one place that must be seen to be believed.
Black Mesa is located in the western Panhandle region and borders Colorado and New Mexico. It's not only the tallest point in the state, but the driest and coldest as well.
Stunning rock formations can be found and have been nicknamed The Three Sisters, Old Maid Rock, and The Wedding Party - the bride, groom and minister.
Visitors to Black Mesa can hike to the top of the plateau. The trail takes about 4 hours but the views are worth the trek.
The area is full of places to explore, like these hidden caves tucked away in the hillside.
Step inside and check out the amazing view of the grass prairies that can be seen for miles and miles.
Black Mesa is located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and you won't find topography like this anywhere else in the state.
You can explore secluded spots and enjoy the mystery and beauty within the park.
Fossilized dinosaur tracks can also be found in a sandstone creek bed in Black Mesa. A vast amount of dinosaur bones have been recovered from the area.
The rugged terrain and ravines are mesmerizing to see. It's even more spectacular in person!
The sunsets and night sky are magical. Black Mesa is known for some of the darkest skies in the country. Astronomers come from all over the country to view meteor showers and for star gazing.
