As diverse as Oklahoma is, you’ll find yourself looking for an easy hike to enjoy its topography. After all, as much fun as a 10-mile hike sounds, not everyone has the time or stamina to endure such a journey. The Jed Johnson Tower Trail to Central Peak is a short 1.4-mile trek that leads to a beautiful lake and an old fire watchtower that was built over 80 years ago. It's located in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge and is a sight to behold in every season.
Check out this relic from years past that is right here in Oklahoma.
Jed Johnson Tower Trail to Central Peak is located in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, just outside of Lawton, and is open year-round to the public.
The Jed Johnson Tower was originally constructed in 1941 to spot forest fires and is still in great condition today. From afar, you can spot it on your hike and it looks like something out of a fairy tale.
This 1.4-mile trek is designed to be enjoyed by all hikers, from beginners to advanced. The trail is not paved but there are not any boulders or hard terrain.
The intricate cobblestone construction is rare and something you would not see if built today because of the cost. Unfortunately, the tower is not able to be used by the public as it is been deemed unsuitable.
The beauty of nature in this part of the state is all around you and can be a great instant therapy session.
Little ones will also love this trail. Dogs are allowed but leashes are required.
The Wichita Mountains in southern Oklahoma are a must-visit for nature-lovers everywhere. There are miles and miles of hiking trails in this area, so if you're looking for more advanced trails, they have plenty.
