There is one trek in Oklahoma that will take you where no other hike can take you - to the highest point in the state - atop Black Mesa in the northwestern Panhandle section of Oklahoma. The trail will take you 4,987 ft. above sea level and is surrounded by sweeping views of some of the most unusual topography in the state.
The hike to the top of Black Mesa is 4.2 miles each way and is considered a moderately strenuous hike.
Park at the Black Mesa Nature Preserve and you'll be directed to the trailhead. The hike begins at the Conservancy gate.
The trail includes 2 miles through the mostly flat valley, 1 mile climbing to the top of the mesa, then another mile on top of the flat mesa area.
The valley portion is wide open and peaceful.
The trail is well marked with mile markers along the way.

Look for the granite memorial once you reach the summit.
Atop Black Mesa the views and wide open space are epic.
Once you get to the edge you can see for miles and miles in every direction.
The rocky, rugged terrain is unique to this portion of the state. And the rock formations and rugged beauty are a sight to behold.
