Known for the darkest nighttime skies in Oklahoma, Black Mesa State Park is the best place to gaze at stars in the Sooner State. This remote area in the Oklahoma Panhandle is ideal for astronomy enthusiasts or anyone who just wants to see a beautiful night sky. Take a look at this incredible star park where you can experience the "dark side" of Oklahoma like never before.
Black Mesa State Park and Black Mesa Nature Preserve are located in the town of Kenton, along the tri-state border with Colorado and New Mexico. There's nothing around for miles and miles, which makes it the perfect place for stargazing.
The topography is gorgeous and rustic in the Panhandle. We recommend arriving in the area before it's dark and exploring the mesas, plateaus, and rock formations.
But the real magic happens after the sun goes down. Black Mesa is without a doubt the best place to see the stars in the state.
In fact, it has some of the darkest nighttime skies on publicly accessible land in the whole country.
Just look at The Milky Way over Black Mesa that was captured so eloquently by Matt Payne. The nearest town is 36 miles away so the only lights you'll see are the ones from above.
Millions and millions of stars decorate the sky like you've never seen before. Thousands of people flock to the area every August to get a front row seat when the annual Perseid meteor shower is visible.
This star park is an epic spot every Oklahoman should visit at least once in their lifetime.
There is so much to explore in the Black Mesa Preserve and Black Mesa State Park. If you will be in the area during the daytime hours, check out this great hike to the highest point in Oklahoma.
