When it comes to the best hiking trails inside the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Osage Lake Trail is nowhere near the top of the list. In fact, most hikers prefer to trek the Elk Mountain Trail instead. Some have no idea that this trail even exists. But that’s what I love the most about the Osage Lake Trail - you might not run into a soul as you trek. Plus, this hidden trail near Indiahoma offers epic lake views and a chance to glimpse bison in their natural habitat. If you ask me, that’s more than enough reason to check it out. This 1.5-mile trail will take you on an unforgettable hiking adventure in Oklahoma.
I don’t know about you, but I love escaping the crowds when I’m vibing with nature. And there is no better place to do that than inside the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge where you’ll find the Osage Lake Trail. Unlike the other more popular trails inside this 59,000-acre sanctuary, you can find peace and solitude as you trek. Sometimes your only companions will be the snakes, elk, deer, prairie dogs, and the occasional bison.
What more can a nature lover ask for? Glad you asked. This scenic trail has so much more to offer. Hidden inside the refuge meandering along Osage Lake, this easy trail is mostly flat but it has some rocky spots to scramble over. This makes it great for the little ones and the pups too. Aside from the breathtaking views of the 5.5-acre lake, you will find lots of cool places to snap some pics.
A favorite is the dam, but it’s only for the bravest of souls. If you’re not afraid of heights, take the steps to the dam and walk across it for extra adventure. At only 1.5 miles long, this loop trail is short, and you can easily complete it in under an hour. But you’re going to want to stay a bit and enjoy the lake as well as the rocky terrain.
You can also bring your kayak to float along the lake. Near the dam, there is a hidden cave accessible by kayak that you must check out. Plus, if you’re lucky, you might get glimpses of the bison and longhorns that call this refuge home. For such a short trail, there is so much adventure and the best part is, you might just have the area to yourself. In my opinion, this is one unforgettable hiking adventure in Oklahoma that you must add to your list. Not to mention, the hidden lake is one of the best places inside the refuge to escape the crowds and enjoy nature.
As with any hike in Oklahoma, we encourage you to download AllTrails Plus as you never know when those offline maps will come in handy. You should also wear sturdy hiking boots because you might encounter some muddy and rocky areas.
