By now, you've likely realized that Ohio is home to some pretty amazing lesser known state parks and hidden gems way out in the boonies.
There's one state park hiding in northeast Ohio that's unlike any other. In addition to beautiful hiking trails, it also features a farm, historic home and restaurant. Rich with history and plenty of places to explore, Malabar Farm State Park is one state park that belongs at the top of your Ohio bucket list. Here's why you'll want to visit the next time you're in the Mansfield area:
Tucked away in Richland County, you'll find this scenic farm and state park. It's located at 4050 Bromfield Rd., Lucas, OH 44843.
The farm was built in the late 1930s by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, who lived on site until he passed away in the 1950s. Today, the farm is a state park, featuring the Pugh Cabin (which is famous for its appearance in The Shawshank Redemption), the historic Ceely Rose House, a superb restaurant and more.
The park is also home to a stunning 32-room main house that Louis Bromfield built and lived in. You can tour this beautiful house on select days and times.
Tours of the house last approximately 45 minutes. For fees, tour hours and other information, click here.
While exploring the farm, you might even get to see some friendly animals. The barn is open to visitors daily from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Some of the animals you might encounter at Malabar Farm State Park include cows, a Shetland pony, miniature horses, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, goats, pigs and more.
The Visitor and Education Center features several exhibits, hands-on activities, a library, conference room and a gift shop.
It's also within walking distance of the main house and multiple trailheads.
If you have the time (and a sense of adventure), the hiking trails are definitely worth exploring here. The Butternut Trail even features a small cave area.

The Malabar Farm Restaurant is housed in a restored 1820s stagecoach inn. The food is exceptional and the ambiance is unparalleled.
In spite of its upscale French and home-cooked cuisine, the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
The menu is pretty widespread, with options such as the Meatloaf with Andouille Sausage and Mashed Potatoes (pictured), to Barbecue Pulled Pork with Homemade Chips.
(And don't forget to save room for dessert. It's a must-have.)
In the warmer months, outside seating is available and the view from the deck is unbelievably beautiful.
No matter the time of year, Malabar Farm State Park is a wonderful place to spend the day. Bring the family or take a date. We know you'll love this one-of-a-kind state park, farm and restaurant.
