In terms of outdoor recreation, the Buckeye State reigns supreme. Not only does Ohio boast an amazing national park, world-class hiking trails, and amazing waterways for kayaking, paddling, and whitewater rafting, but our state is also home to the most miles of bike trails in the country. There are more than 17,000 miles of bike miles in the U.S., over 1,500 of which are in Ohio. Grab a bike and helmet; adventure awaits along the Ohio bike trails.
The Buckeye State has long been a favorite spot for avid cyclers, but in 2021, it gained national notoriety with the addition of new trails by the Adventure Cycling Association.
The Adventure Cycling Association added 2,903 miles to the U.S. Bicycle Route System in 2021; six of those trails totaling 1,177 miles were officially designated in Ohio, bringing the state's total number of U.S. Bicycle Route miles to 1,523, the most of any state in the country.
This is a big feather in the Buckeye State's cap; a move that shows everyone just how top-tier our outdoor recreation -- in particular, cycling -- truly is.
Avid cyclists, of course, have long known this. This is the Alum Creek Bike Trail in Columbus, a year-round favorite near the state capital.
The 326-mile Ohio to Erie Trail is a bucket-list accomplishment for many, offering an unrivaled scenic adventure into some of the state's most stunning and spectacular natural areas.
But the Buckeye State's bike trails are also suitable for casual cyclists and young bikers, too. Southwest Ohio's Loveland Bike Trail is a family favorite, with points of interest like parks, shaved ice shacks, and restaurants along the way. The entire trail is 70 miles long, but most families tackle just a few miles around quaint towns like Loveland and Milford.
The Cleveland Foundation Centennial Lake Link Trail has long been a favorite for Northern Ohioans. Located on the west bank of the flats in Cleveland, the Lake Link Trail is built on what was once the Cleveland-Mahoning Railroad line. This 1.3-mile loop is particularly scenic during the height of fall foliage!
Whether you're a newbie cycler or seasoned pro, you'll find something to enjoy along the Ohio bike trails -- and, of course, lots and lots of scenic splendor.
Ohio is home to some of the most scenic hiking and water trails around, so it stands to reason the Buckeye State's bike trails would also be superlative.
