There's something about a bridge that's irresistible. Whether it's a massive architectural feat, a charming covered bridge, or an exciting swinging bridge, we can never pass up the opportunity to marvel at these man-made wonders. Well, Buckeye State bridge enthusiasts, we have an adventure for you! There is an Ohio State Park with not one, but two glorious bridges -- a covered bridge *and* a swinging bridge -- providing a grand adventure that's just plain delightful.
Would you believe this lovely expanse is right here, in Ohio? It's true! Located in northeastern Ohio, the 1,110-acre Mohican State Park and the adjacent 4,525-acre state forest offer unrivaled opportunities for visitors to explore one of the state's most stunning natural regions.
The park is known for its land and water features; over 14,000 years ago, glaciers carved out the narrow Clear Fork Gorge.
The gorge is more than 1,000 feet wide at the top and more than 300 feet deep -- a 29-acre state nature preserve characterized by its old-growth White Pine and Eastern Hemlock forest. It's one of many enchanting places throughout Mohican State Park.
In addition to its old-growth forest, there are numerous man-made features that make this Ohio State Park a magical place to recreate.
The Mohican Covered Bridge is one of them. Dedicated in 1968 and spanning the scenic Clear Fork River, the bridge is a popular spot at Mohican State Park. It’s located on Mohican Road 58, near the trailhead to the popular two-mile Lyons Falls Trail.
(Yes -- there is a waterfall at Mohican State Park, too!)
But that's not all -- in 2021, this Ohio State Park added a suspension bridge to the party.
The bridge spans 120 feet and leads explorers across the Clear Fork of the Mohican State Scenic River connecting the Hemlock Gorge Trail with the Gorge Overlook Trail. This gorgeous bridge is a whimsical and fun addition to the park's robust trail system.
And just when you thought this Ohio State Park couldn't get any more charming...
...there's the Wolf Creek Grist Mill! Constructed in 1831, the Wolf Creek (Pine Run) Grist Mill is located literally in Mohican State Park, and it's open to the public as a working museum. What a grand finale to your adventure at Mohican State Park!
Mohican State Park truly is the sum of its parts; a hidden gem in Ohio offering unrivaled recreation opportunities.
Have you visited this Buckeye State park before? Mohican State Park really is one of the crown jewels of the Ohio State Parks system.
Speaking of bridges, did you know that an Ohio bridge was once the longest suspension bridge in the country?
