Here in Greater Cleveland, we locals love a good outdoor adventure. Nothing quite compares to a day spent surrounded by forest, admiring the greenery of the earth and the crispness of the air. One of the best outdoor adventures for Ohioans involves a partnership between man and Mother Nature... that's right, we're talking about quarry swimming! Old sandstone and limestone quarries crisscross the state, reminding us of early construction in the area. However, underground springs, rainwater, and even local rivers and lakes have turned many of these former quarries into incredible swimming holes. Today, we're going to venture to the coolest swimming quarry near Cleveland, White Star Quarry Beach. It's about 90 minutes away in an area you may not have heard of, but it is so worth a visit. Let's take a look.
Welcome to White Star Quarry Beach in Ohio!
Once upon a time, White Star looked very different. The park's landscape was once a limestone quarry, but time has transformed its appearance. The days of mining are long gone, yet human activity has continued at the pretty outdoor site.
White Star Quarry is a little slice of paradise about 90 minutes from Cleveland in the Village of Gibsonburg.
Gibsonburg is a tiny community in Sandusky County, and most locals have never even heard of it. However, White Star Park offers a special way to make summers memorable.
The historic community has fewer than 2,500 residents, but White Star Quarry attracts visitors from all over the state.
The surrounding park offers shelter rentals, camping opportunities, and so much more. The White Star Park Barn and Cabin area is home to the annual Sandusky County Restorers of Antique Power show, which is held on Labor Day weekend.
Here, you can swim, fish, boat, and even hike along a 0.8-mile trail that circles the quarry. This is one of our favorite beaches in Ohio!
If you're considering boating here, keep in mind that only hand-powered and electric motors are allowed.
There's fun to be had by visitors of all ages... and species, too!
Hiking, swimming, and enjoying the outdoors are fun for everyone. Adults and kids alike will have a good time, and your pups just might get something out of the experience, too!
While most come to the quarry to swim on White Star Beach, scuba diving offers a unique way to cool off on a pleasant day.
Scuba diving at the quarry is one of the best experiences you can possibly have! It is considered to be one of the best inland diving experiences near Cleveland and, once you're underwater, you'll understand why.
From above, the lake looks like any other...
The rate for diving is $20 per day (per diver), and you can rent equipment to make your experience flawless and memorable.
...though you will spot evidence of the historic quarry along its perimeter.
All in all, the lake spans 15 acres. Its average depth is around 40 feet, and visibility underwater is outstanding.
Underwater, more of the old mining operation is visible... and there are some interesting attractions that will pique your curiosity!
Swim through an underwater forest, wave at local fish species, and swim over an old Frito Lay truck. This is a super unique experience through and through!
You'll be amazed by how clear and blue the water here is...
While you're underwater, the experience is one you'll want to brag about. However, beauty abounds above water, too!
...whether you're below the water or floating on its surface.
This relaxing spot is an incredible way to make the most of summer in Northern Ohio.
This charming beach and quarry is truly a one-of-a-kind Ohio gem.
This swimming quarry near Cleveland is close enough for a quick day trip, and it's almost too cool to explain. You truly have to check out the White Star Quarry Beach in person!
