There are countless places around Cincinnati to take a hike and reconnect with nature - places where you can walk deep into the woods, through a large, open field, or along a creek bed. They all have their own highlights and charm, and we featured some of the best previously here.
However, there is another set of hiking trails just south of Cincinnati in Ft. Mitchell, that can be found in the most unexpected setting. Highland Cemetery is a beautiful property that also happens to have four miles of hiking trails. It's along these trails that you'll discover a beautiful little waterfall hike that's hidden away and perfect for a little adventure near Cincinnati.
Highland Cemetery is located in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, right off the 71/75 Dixie Highway exit. It's easy to get to and boasts a surprising natural feature.
Adjacent to the cemetery property are 150 acres that are a part of a Wildlife Enhancement Program. Within this acreage, about four miles of hiking trails have been created and they happen to be some of the best in the area. Given the nature of the property - and this goes for all hiking trails - it's extremely important to respect the land, plant life, and wildlife by sticking to the designated trails and leaving no trace or your visit.
When you arrive at the main gate of the cemetery, drive through and then continue making right turns until you pass a lake on the right. The small trail parking lot is just past the lake.
While the trails are marked, it's a good idea to pick up a map or print one off from the website (linked below). The paths are very natural and can occasionally be a bit confusing as to which way to go. The thick vegetation, especially in the middle of summer, provides a beautiful canopy and plenty of shade. In the spring, the trails are lined with wildflowers, fall is full of bright colors, and winter is characterized by icy creeks and animal prints in the snow and mud.
The water features along the trails are some of the highlights of this area. Of course, the water flow is dependent on the amount of recent rain, but they are always beautiful to see.
If you can catch the rocky creeks and overhangs at the right time, you'll discover a number of little waterfalls that are downright enchanting.
Even with a slower water flow, the creeks make for lovely photos and peaceful surroundings. You definitely feel as if you've stumbled upon a secret place, as it is often very quiet and rarely filled with foot traffic.
The hiking trails within Highland Cemetery were created so locals could get out and enjoy nature in a serene setting. That goal has definitely been achieved.
The trails are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., so you can plan a little adventure soon. Dogs are allowed on the trails only, and with a moderate difficulty rating, these paths are great for almost any level of hiker.
The hiking trails at Highland Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell are a natural hidden gem that is worth seeking out for adventure, relaxation, and hopefully some waterfall chasing. Did you know about these hidden trails near Cincinnati? Let us know in the comments!
