When it comes to hiking, Northeast Ohio has no shortage of beautiful views. From rocky ledges to forested paths, Cleveland and beyond is filled with surprises that nature lovers adore. However, many of the finest parks are hidden in towns with less than 5,000 residents or so. While locals know them inside and out, many of these parks have remained a closely-guarded local secret. Some places, like French Creek Reservation in Greater Cleveland, are absolute hidden gems, but they're well worth exploring. If you're a Clevelander, you have to budget some time to visit this gorgeous park in Sheffield. It's stunning in every season, so you can't go wrong with a visit any time of year!
Tucked away in Sheffield, Ohio, is one charming landscape of 450 acres awaiting exploration.
This slice of paradise is French Creek Reservation, part of the Lorain County Metro Parks. From ravines to wildflowers, there's no shortage of beauty here. If you're a fan of canoeing or kayaking, you can also launch your boat and explore French Creek and the Black River in Sheffield Village.
There's more than 4.5 miles of trails at French Creek Reservation, and three separate creeks infuse diversity to each path.
French Creek, the most prominent of the three waterways, is the namesake of the park. But its smaller siblings, Sugar Creek and Fish Creek, are equally as beautiful.
The asphalt and natural trails work together with footbridges to provide excellent views that are stunning in each and every season.
The park is beautifully diverse, with some sections dating back 100 years. Other portions of the park have been replanted and lovingly restored by the Metro Parks, but there's beauty in every corner of the park.
And many surprises await sharp-eyed visitors in the wooded park.
The landscape here once provided hunting grounds for early Ohioans, and evidence like thousand year old arrowheads supports their presence. There's even more to discover, though... from this property's prevalence on the Underground Railroad to the restoration efforts in the 1960s, a great deal of history is preserved in this park if you know where to look.
If these stunning views aren't enough to satisfy your itch for a day trip, you might check out their French Creek Theatre program.
Located inside the on-site Nature Center, French Creek Theatre is an incredible addition to any visit. Their year-round performances span everything from Shakespearean classics to modern pop culture stories, and many of the shows are free. The schedule is worth checking out, and the Nature Center is, too!
After a trip to the Nature Center, you might walk away with a new appreciation for the landscape.
I love looking at the plant life here. If you're a fan of trees, cottonwood, maple, sycamore, and other species thrive here.
You truly never know who you're going to meet while you're out exploring in this neat park near Cleveland...
Now I'm no entomologist, but I do enjoy taking a moment to appreciate a pretty insect. This guy, I believe, is a tussock moth caterpillar. Despite his bright colors, this little guy is going to turn into a brown moth with fuzzy antennae. If you encounter one on your hike, it's best to leave it be — their hairs can cause a rash. Aside from being respectful of the natural residents of the forest, it's also just a general best practice to leave no trace beyond footsteps.
...And you won't believe how the mundane moments seem magical at French Creek Reservation.
There's just something about natural beauty that's unbeatable. The simplest creations can, if you look closely, be quite intricate and magical. Don't hesitate to pause and take in the landscape... there's something to discover around every corner.
Budget a bit of time to stop and snap a few pictures, as the views in French Creek Reservation will humble you.
