It's fairly well known that within a few short hours of Cincinnati, you can reach some pretty unbelievable hiking destinations -- including Hocking Hills, Clifty Falls and Red River Gorge. But did you know that we have epic hiking available right here in the Queen City? As in minutes from downtown? We've rounded up the top seven spots in Cincinnati to get outside and reconnect with nature in our beautiful city.
1. Mt. Airy Forest Ridge Loop Trail - 5083 Colerain Ave. Cincinnati, OH 45223
You'd never expect to find miles of hiking trails in the middle of an urban area, but Mt. Airy Forest delivers just that. The 3.7 mile Loop Trail can be challenging with elevation changes and a long, steep stone staircase, but the surroundings are natural and vibrant -- making it a great escape within the city limits.
2. Withrow Nature Preserve Trail - 7075 Five Mile Road Cincinnati, OH 45230
This short but sweet trail is perfect for an outdoor run or quick hike. The 1.8 mile loop can be challenging in spots, but it has a nice view of the Ohio River and is usually a quiet spot to enjoy the outdoors.
3. Ohio River Trail - Downtown along the river
You've likely walked a portion of this trail before, and never realized just how far it goes. With the addition of Smale Park, you can now hike 4.6 miles along the river, taking in the views and learning about Cincinnati's history. The pathway is paved, so it's not exactly a hike in the woods, but it's still one of the best trails in the city.
4. French Park - 3012 Section Rd. Cincinnati, OH 45237
You'll love this three-mile hike in the summer for its shaded pathways and access to the creek. French Park is an oasis in the city that will make you feel like you're far away. The trail is well-marked and easy to explore, and there are picnic areas available to make a day of it.
5. Rowe Woods Perimeter Trail at Cincinnati Nature Center - 4949 Tealtown Rd. Milford, OH 45150
One of the hidden natural treasures in the city, the Cincinnati Nature Center offers several trails for all types of outdoor enthusiasts. The perimeter trail is the father of them all at nine miles. This hike will give you a plethora of picturesque views, challenging ups and downs, and a set of steps for variety. There is a fee to enter the Nature Center, but it's worth it to visit this scenic preserve in the city.
6. Adena Loop Trail within East Fork State Park - 3294 Elklick Rd. Bethel, OH 45106
East Fork State Park, just east of Cincinnati, is a local hiker's paradise. The Adena Loop Trail is 2.6 miles and doubles as both a hiking and mountain bike trail. This spot offers a fun challenge for both novice and experienced hikers. The trail is mostly wooded, with some peeks of the lake and plenty of opportunities to see wildlife and scenic surroundings.
7. Little Turtle Trail at Shawnee Lookout - 2008 Lawrenceburg Rd. North Bend, OH 45052
Just west of downtown in North Bend, Ohio, Shawnee Lookout is a historic area with beautiful views. The Little Turtle Trail is great for all ages and takes hikers through the woods with views of the Ohio River throughout. The trail is easy to follow and serves as a delightful way to spend some time outdoors.
