If you want to try an easy hike in North Dakota that will take you to one of the most spectacular views in the entire states, I highly recommend trying the Wind Canyon Trail in the South Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It's under half a mile long and the end is absolutely worth the hike.
Wind Canyon Trail is named for the canyons carved by wind over hundreds of years. Their enchanting crevices and colorful layers are fascinating to look at and hike through.
The trail winds next to the Little Missouri river and gives some absolutely spectacular views of it.
As you head up the 0.4 mile trail, don't be surprised if you see some wildlife on the way. There is plenty and it makes a prime spot to see some awesome animals.
The best time of the day to take the hike is near the end. As you reach the end, you'll end up at one of the best spots in the entire park - and state - to watch the sun set over the badlands. The park rangers even recommend it! And it is truly beautiful:
It's best to plan this hike for an end-of-the-day activity after exploring some places around the rest of the South Unit in the park, like the Maltese Cross Cabin. Since the trail should only take about 15-30 minutes to hike, try to plan it so you reach the end when the sun is setting. The park rangers there should know exactly where and when to do so, feel free to ask them.
This is one of many trails in the Theodore Roosevelt National park. You can see a full list of trails, Wind Canyon Trail included, here.
I'm going to try to go here this summer and experience it myself - it just looks utterly gorgeous. What do you think? If you've done it yourself, tell us about your trip!
