North Dakota's natural beauty shines in these natural wonders that will take your breath away. There's plenty of gorgeous spots in the state and here are just a few. They are very deserving of a visit - you can only get a true idea of how impressive they are in person, so I highly recommend it. Check them out.
1. Chase Lake
This spectacular aerial view of a nesting island in Chase Lake, part of the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge, is the nesting grounds to thousands of birds. White pelicans, hawks, ibises, herons, geese, and others call this place their home. It's a beautiful place and a wonder of nature when you see the thousands of birds gathered here year after year.
2. Theodore Roosevelt National Park
One of the most beloved and breathtaking parts of North Dakota is definitely here. The magnificent canyons and valleys are full of color and life. It's nature at its very finest and will never fail to impress.
3. Red River of the North
The Red River is one of the few rivers in North America that have a northward flow. The beautiful river is a vital part of our state and a pretty one at that. The Red can be a powerful force of nature during flood seasons but also a calm and serene place to be in the outdoors. It flows past our eastern towns and cities and is rightfully an important part of the state.
4. White Butte
This is the highest point in North Dakota. The white-faced walls of this butte stand tall among the prairie around it. The elevation of White Butte is 3,506 ft above sea level. The carved walls of the butte were created over centuries from gradual erosion and resulted in the towering form it is today.
5. Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence
Two mighty rivers meet at this confluence out near Buford. The longest river in North America, the Missouri, is fed by one of its longest tributaries, the Yellowstone, which is 702 miles long. The area is a beautiful sight and was one of Lewis and Clark's favorites. Take in the same view they did by visiting there yourself.
6. Sheyenne National Grassland
These wonderful, wide, grassy plains lie in the south east corner of North Dakota and show how beautiful the prairie can be. The openness of it all can be taken in and enjoyed. Bright, open skies and the absence of an urban environment can be a great way to appreciate nature in North Dakota. The area of the grassland is over 70,000 acres. Just wow!
7. Pembina Gorge
This breathtaking gorge has been carved out over hundreds of years by the Pembina River that runs through it. It is a gorgeously forested area near Walhalla. It's definitely one of those places that makes you appreciate nature for its fantastic sights alone. This spot is one of North Dakota's best hidden gems, for sure.
Which of these have you seen in person or are planning to see? Seeing them in person is the best way to experience them by far!
