Whether you are a fan of J. R. R. Tolkien's famous fantasy series or not, you don't have to go far to find a place as enchanting and beautiful as the settings surrounding the adventures of hobbits, elves, and old wizards in the tales. North Dakota has its own Middle Earth, and it's simply breathtaking. Go on a walk through this park and you will find yourself on an epic journey through one of the state's most beautiful natural areas.
The rolling green hills of Fort Ransom State Park look like something that would be just outside of The Shire.
The park surrounds the Sheyenne River and trails often cross bridges over the calm and reflecting waters.
The area is also heavily wooded, with plenty of trees to walk through and explore.
This is also part of the Sheyenne State Forest, and the more dense areas are perfectly serene. Hidden deep within the forest is also North Dakota's one and only natural waterfall.
Small creeks can be found in the woods as your journey continues. Everything seems like something from a fairy tale, come to life in better ways than you could imagine.
You may even be able to spot some curious creatures throughout your travels.
Outside of the trees is grassy meadows and valleys that can be seen full of life in the spring and summer.
It truly is a one-of-a-kind, whimsical and delightful place. The views are nothing short of spectacular.
The state park includes a historic farmstead that adds to the picturesque setting. You can take an amazing drive through it on the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway, or hike on some of the many trails throughout the forest and the park.
It's located about 34 miles south of Valley City. If you would like more information, click here.
