It's the delightful, one-of-a-kind Harmon Lake Trail, and it's just over eight miles of perfectly idyllic scenery wonderful for an afternoon out enjoying nature. The Harmon Lake Recreation Area is a 145-acre reservoir situated on beautiful Otter Creek.
It's home to two stunning, sandy shores that are perfect for sinking your toes into. What better way to explore this little slice of paradise than by hiking?
Luckily for us, the Harmon Lake Trail is here and ready to be conquered.
It's got an elevation gain of just 745 feet over the entire eight-mile span. There are no major inclines or tall hills, and nothing that makes the trek particularly challenging.
It's the perfect escape for someone looking to spend an afternoon enjoying North Dakota's whimsical outdoors without breaking too much of a sweat.
Don't worry about downloading a map; it's a simple loop trail around the lake and it's impossible to get lost.
Harmon Lake is one of the most underrated lakes in North Dakota.
It's clear, clean, and stocked with fish (mainly rainbow trout and and cutthroat trout fingerlings). Though boating is permitted, this is a no-wake lake meaning speeds must be kept minimal. It's all about the peace and quiet out here, which makes it the perfect hiking trail.
The trail is well-marked, fun, and worth a try.
Even if you can't do the whole thing all at once (eight miles is a lot), no worries there, either! You can do it at your own pace and for as long (or as briefly) as you'd like. Pack plenty of water and wear good shoes - even though it's an easy hike, you definitely want to stay hydrated and make sure you play it safe.
