We may not have a carved mountain like our southernly neighbor, but we do have some pretty amazing works of man-made architecture. From giant sculptures to beautiful courthouses, North Dakota is full of great examples of the wonders that we as humans can accomplish and create.
1. Gol Stave Church at Scandinavian Heritage Park
This beautiful work of architecture is a testament to the Scandinavian countries of which the original church it is based off of is located. The entire park is filled with some very beautiful structures that represent each country within Scandinavia - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark. This particular structure was built based off of the original Gol Stave Church in Oslo, Norway that was built all the way back in 1212.
2. Hi-Line Railroad Bridge
This mighty bridge in Valley City was built back in 1908. It was the longest railroad bridge in the world for its height at the time and still is one of the longest ones in the nation. The bridge was very essential during war time and it was even guarded by soldiers to prevent any sabotage or damage to it. It's a piece of history as well as an impressive structure and it's right here in North Dakota.
3. North Dakota has some of the prettiest county courthouses, like this one.
The Cass County courthouse.
4. This one, too!
The Pierce County courthouse.
5. And definitely this one.
The Dickey County courthouse. So many beautiful courthouses, some in very small towns. We certainly like our courthouses to stand out. And a lot of them are equally impressive on the inside - I'd recommend taking a courthouse tour in the state if you like this type of man-made architecture. Gorgeous!
6. KVLY-TV Mast
Okay, so this one isn't exactly beautiful, but it is astounding in size. This is the tallest man-made structure in the western hemisphere, at a towering 2,063 feet in height. It only took 30 days to build back in 1963 and it is still used today. This mast is taller than the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower, and the CN Tower - wow!!
7. St. Mary's Catholic Church
This church located in the small town of Hague, ND - population 71 - is extremely impressive. The beautiful tower, an intricate altar, classic architecture, and just breathtaking design makes it a hidden gem in the state. It features murals and paintings done by Count Berthold Imhoff, a German painter born in 1868.
8. The International Peace Garden
The garden is not only an important symbol of peace between us and our northern neighbor Canada; it is also downright breathtaking. Thousands of flowers are planted here each year to give the garden its colorful, vibrant looks. It is a true testament to the kind of beauty we're capable of producing.
9. Enchanted Highway
What more fitting for this list than the Enchanted Highway? Many larger-than-life metal sculptures line this highway to result in a simply enchanting and wonderful drive. These are the kind of works of art you have to see in person to get the full experience - they are HUGE.
There are a lot of beautiful places in North Dakota, both natural and human-built. Can you think of any others that would be perfect for this list?
