The Pembina Gorge: a rare jewel on the prairie. The natural, expansive forest surrounding the winding Pembina River is the largest, undisturbed forest in North Dakota. It's perfect for plenty of recreational opportunities.
There is a large park, the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area, that has plenty of trails for hiking and biking as well as places to launch kayaks. Kayaking is one of the most popular activities in the park.
Kayak rentals are offered from North Dakota Parks & Recreation at $8 an hour, so you can take a spin on the river even if you don't have the equipment. You'll traverse various water conditions and get an experience you won't find anywhere else in the state.
Kayak under the old Brick Mine Bridge, through the deep gorge, and alongside wildlife that you might spot from the river.
The views are second to none, with the forest being deep green and lush with flora and fauna in the summer, turning into the most vivid colors in the fall that make the gorge famous.
The Pembina River is actually North Dakota's only true "white water river," so if you had plans to white water raft in the state, this is where to do it!
