There are many lovely state parks in North Dakota where you can enjoy trails, camping, and some nice scenery. There is only one park, however, that has quite the combination of activities this particular one does. Take a trolley ride into a place full of natural beauty, history, and so much more all at this one great place in the Peace Garden State.
Hop on North Dakota's only operating trolley train to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and you'll be in for a day full of fun. This trolley departs from Third Street Station in Mandan, North Dakota.
The trolley ride is nine miles long and will take you on a lovely journey through the surroundings of the park and to the fun activities that await you at Fort Lincoln.
You'll cross bridges, go through the trees, and take in the natural beauty of the area. You can choose to go on a round trip or spend extra time at the park and take a later trolley back.
At Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park itself, you'll find tons of history. Custer's house, barracks, blockhouses, and even a village of Native American earth lodges are there and open for visitors to explore.
These buildings have been made historically authentic both inside and out and you can learn all about life at the fort and what important historical events happened here.
The On-A-Slant Village is also worth a look while visiting. Located next to the Missouri River, these reconstructed earth lodges used to be found in the hundreds across the prairie but there are now just the remnants. They show what it was like in these villages back in the day and preserve their history.
Along with the many historical sites, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is also great for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping. It's a history buff and nature lover's paradise, yet absolutely anyone can enjoy it to its fullest.
More information about Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park can be found on its official website.
