Milk, bread, and eggs have all but vanished off grocery shelves in North Carolina. Many were pre-preparing for the first winter storm of 2017. While the storm first brought rain to Charlotte, snow flurries to the Piedmont, and flurries to Raleigh - it then took a turn and everyone with their milk and bread were thankful for their purchases.
Early in the week, forecasts were predicting around 3-8 inches for much of North Carolina. Even eastern regions of the state were bracing for the worst as chances for precipitation grew to 100%.
Around 8PM Friday night, North Carolinians found themselves a bit disappointed as most of the "snow" was actually just rain - but meteorologists assured that this was just the beginning and the snow was indeed on the way. They stressed a 'sharp cutoff' for those who received a lot of snow and those who would get just a dusting. Charlotte, Raleigh, and ENC were predicted at around 4-6 inches while the Piedmont and WNC saw around 2-3 inches.
It wasn't just North Carolina, but a lot of the southeast bracing for winter precipitation. People in cities like Atlanta, Columbia and Greenville, whose snow days are a bit like ours (rare), were staying in Friday night as things got cold. Nashville had also already encountered the winter storm, and while North Carolinians began to doubt whether they'd see any flakes, eventually it happened.
Prior to even the first flake falling, Gov. Cooper issued a State of Emergency for all 100 counties in North Carolina. As the night went on and many didn't see any sign of snow, meteorologists took to Twitter to assure there would indeed be snow.
The heaviest snowfall was predicted around 3 A.M with a winter storm warning in effect from 7 P.M Friday to 1 P.M Saturday. While snowfall wasn't significant in some regions, it was the freezing temps that prompted residents to stay in. In Charlotte the Saturday low is predicted at 10 degrees and the high at 30. Sunday, while the sun might shine, the high is supposed to reach just in the 30s around NC with lows in teens and even single digits in certain regions.
The wintry mix of snow, sleet, and ice has left different results for each region of the state. While some are taking to the sleds, others are wishing they had salted their walkways as ice remains heavy. One thing is for sure - with these freezing temps the snow is here to say for a bit!
What kind of snow did you get in your region of the state? Did you see any snow at all or just some ice?
While some love the snow and embrace it to the fullest, others aren't so happy to potentially get a bit of cabin fever. While snow is always a mixed feeling - we can all agree on these 12 thoughts we have before a big snowstorm!
