Hiking in the mountains of North Carolina is a favorite past time and adventure-packed activity for many in the Tar Heel State. If you've ever found yourself looking to gain incredible North Carolina mountain views without fighting the crowds in all the usual spots, then this 2.8 mile round trip hike to a fire tower lookout could be the answer you're looking for.
The Wesser Bald Fire Tower is located at an elevation of 4,627 feet in the Nantahala National Forest. From the top of the tower you'll have 360-degree, unobstructed views that seem to go on forever.
The trail to the lookout drops you on the Appalachian Trail for 1.4 miles (the total one-way distance to the tower). You know you're going to have a great hike anytime you can set foot on any part of this legendary trail.
Although this hike is rated easy, be forewarned that it's a steady uphill climb for the entire route, with an elevation gain of 718 feet.
Once you reach the tower, give it one last push to make it up the wooden stairs to the observation deck for incredible views!
The mountains of North Carolina are calling — and you must go! (Special thanks to John Muir... )

Planning your hike? A special item of note is that there are three known routes to hike to Wesser Bald Fire Tower. (You can see details for all three at this link.) The route in this article is detailed here on alltrails.com. You'll find the parking area for this route on Otter Creek Road seen on this Google Maps link. Be sure to have your bearings on which way to hike once you get there (note the location of the fire tower as marked on the Google map) because at last report, there were no signs at the trail head indicating why way you should journey on the Appalachian Trail. Wesser Bald Fire Lookout trail is best used from March through October and dogs are able to use the trail as long as they are leashed.
