What is a beautiful mountain by day becomes something completely different, paranormal, and mysterious by night. Many have witnessed the anomaly of the Brown Mountain Lights for themselves, but there has never been a definitive answer on what exactly the 'lights' are.
Just after sundown, as darkness overtakes the rough terrain, strange lights begin to appear in the distance on Brown Mountain.
The glowing orbs of light appear and then vanish, some different colors, some larger than others. Witnesses have even reported hearing a repetitive thud sound, like a beating drum, as the lights eerily dance above and below the treetops.
There's several different theories on what exactly could be causing the lights. Science says it's 'marsh gas,' although there are no marshes in the area. More extreme views link to 'aliens,' with even some Brown Mountain Abduction articles circulating (mostly from fake news outlets.)
And to stress out your brain even more, the above picture displays MORE possible 'causes' for these mysterious lights.
Some speculate the lights are orbs of Native American ghosts. Souls still looking for lost loved ones after a great battle (that took place in the area) or either those killed in the battle. Perhaps, a combination of both. This theory also correlates with the strange sound of 'drums' sometimes accompanying the lights.
Regardless of what you believe the lights are caused from, you can witness them with your own two eyes. Visit this website for more information on how to access a viewpoint and the best time for witnessing them.
If you need more proof, even National Geographic got involved in this fascinating mystery, watch these videos below.
Wow, not even going to lie, the video alone gave me chills - so just imagine what it's like to see them in person! Have you witnessed the Brown Mountain lights for yourself - or have any theories on what could be causing them?
