Standing at 600-foot tall, the granite dome is the central attraction and eye candy at Stone Mountain State Park. Visitors marvel at the large granite formation, and your first time witnessing it is always the most amazing. But while the 'Stone' gets all the attention (and the namesake) there's so much to do at this 14,000 plus acre state park.

With an exposed, sloping face, some of the best rock climbing in North Carolina can be found at Stone Mountain. The climb is only recommended to experienced climbers, as there are no lessons or guides. Those wishing to go up, must register with the park and secure a permit at no cost. When at the top, the views are simply incredible. But if you want to do more than scale a 600-ft. rock, there's plenty of adventure to be had.

For those looking for a day filled with hiking, the park offers three amazing trails. The first being one-mile Cedar Rock Trail that takes you to a granite outcrop with a great view of Stone Mountain.

Another is Wolf Rock Trail, a 1.5 mile hike that leads to you to breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Even horseback riders are welcome, and love the 5-mile Bridal Trail.

A favorite hike of seasoned visitors is the Stone Mountain Trail Loop. While the trail can get somewhat strenuous, it's worth the work out! The trail starts you at three-quarters of a mile up the mountain.

You'll pass by the gorgeous Stone Mountain Falls , then continue 1.25 miles to the top of Stone Mountain Falls.

The small but fun Widow Creek Falls also offers a place to take a cool and refreshing dip after a long hike.

Stone Mountain is even home to the Hutchinson Homestead. History buffs will love the preserved, 19th-century cabin, barn, blacksmith shop and original furnishings that transport you back in time.

If you want to make the most of your visit, Stone Mountain offers family-friendly campgrounds, with six campgrounds for groups, and 37 campsites for families.

While many state parks in the Blue Ridge receive all the attention, this little-known gem in Alleghany County really takes you away from it all. It offers some of the most unique scenery (with a 600 ft. granite dome, hello) and also plenty of adventure and activity. Visit in the fall for some truly gorgeous scenery!
