North Carolina is an ideal place for people who love all four seasons - and for people who just love to get outside and play. Whether it's downhill skiing, taking a dip in the Atlantic or a waterfall swimming hole, or hiking along the many trails that likely number well into the thousands in the Tar Heel State, outdoor enthusiasts love it here - and for good reason: there is a lot to do!
The very next time you're headed anywhere near Murphy, located in Western North Carolina, make it a point to hit this historic trail that's so unique, even Google sent a footman in with a camera to record the journey. (You can actually walk the trail on Google Maps!)
The adventure is approximately three miles, and carries you along the Valley River, one of the two rivers that run through Murphy. You'll pass through historic areas along both paved and gravel footpaths.
Additionally, you'll encounter a few boardwalks and short observation decks along the way; all the while admiring the sights and the sounds of the gently moving Valley River.
Expect to cross a few quaint footbridges along the way. Stop and admire the clear river water flowing beneath before you continue your journey.
The trail begins at the end of Konehete Park and winds its way all the way around the western peninsula of the town.
You'll find plenty of places to stop and reflect along the way, whether it's on one of those picturesque footbridges or a quiet bench.
The trail makes its way from start to finish at the historic L & N Depot next to the Hiwassee Bridge.
But not before you get to cross under an old railroad trestle! The historic L&N Depot, circa 1887, was the meeting place of the Southern and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Several historic rail cars are on display at the site. Check them out, and then head back the way you came so you can double your pleasure with a repeat look at this beautiful walk along the water in downtown Murphy.
The Murphy River Walk and Canoe Trails are under the stewardship of the River Walk Heritage Partners. For a map of the River Walk, canoe trails and parking lots, see this link. The River Walk is open from dawn to dusk and admission is free. If you wish to donate, see this link on the official website for Heritage Partners.
