If you love history and experiencing it firsthand, what better way is there than visiting covered bridges in North Carolina? Especially one of the most historic covered bridges, on a bona fide covered bridge trail. Covered bridges used to get those on horse and buggy (or just horse or foot) from point A to point B... long before the days of cars and even railways. North Carolina may not have an abundance of covered bridges (we have three, for what it's worth), but what we lack in quantity, we more than make up for in quality. Of the state's covered bridges, the Pisgah Covered Bridge comes equipped with a walking trail and beautiful, woodsy surroundings. Are you ready to embark on an epic, covered bridge hike in North Carolina? Let's do it!
Pisgah Covered Bridge was built for a mere $40 in 1911. It's located outside of Asheboro in the rugged and beautiful Uwharrie National Forest. The bridge isn't just about manmade beauty, though; it's surrounded by greenery, walking trails, and woods, and is perfect for a day trip.
The bridge crosses over the Little River and is 54 feet in length.
In 1998 the North Carolina Zoo, North Carolina Department of Transportation, the Piedmont Land Conservancy, and the Landtrust for Central North Carolina collaborated to maintain and refurbish the bridge.
Yet, the bridge was almost destroyed in 2003 when a flood washed it away.
Luckily, 90% of the original wood and pieces were salvaged. Today, the Pisgah Covered Bridge holds all of its original charm and beauty.
Today, the bridge is designated as a local and federal historic landmark. There's a gate to get to the bridge and you can access this wonder from dawn to dusk. The surrounding nature is gorgeous, with a serene stream, foot trail, and quarter-mile trail through the woods. It's a unique and adventurous experience! Locals and visitors love to first visit the bridge, then take the day to walk on the foot trail, go down by the creek, and even explore the surrounding nature. It also makes a beautiful backdrop for photoshoots. While the bridge is the central feature and attraction, you'll also want to check out the nature trail and surrounding landscape.
It's crazy all of the beautiful and amazing things you'll find hiding in the woods of North Carolina. There's so much history here, and better yet, preserved history.
