A natural phenomena is defined as an observable event which is not manmade. They can range from simple, daily occurrences like a sunrise, to jaw dropping supercells, or the magical aurora borealis. North Carolina has quite a few natural phenomena of it its own, three remain a mystery to this day.
1. Shadow of the Bear, Cashiers
For a few weeks in early spring and late autumn, a strange shadow takes form on Whiteside Mountain. This is no normal shadow. When fully formed it strikingly resembles that of a bear. See for yourself in the video above.
2. Brown Mountain Lights

For over 100 years, no one has been able to figure out what the Brown Mountain Lights are. Some say they are aliens, others say they are ghosts...science says it's marsh gas (although there are no marshes in the area). Appearing after sunset, the lights change in size, color, and shape. Legends link the lights to ‘ghost maidens’ searching for their loved ones after a great battle of The Cherokee and Catawba.
3. Devil's Tramping Ground, Chatham County

The Devil’s Tramping Ground is a 40-foot diameter circle completely absent of life. Nothing will grow here. Leave something in the circle, and legend says it will be thrown out the next day. Apparently, the devil needs plenty of room to dance at night.
4. Waterspouts

A waterspout is a non supercell tornado that forms over water. When tornado season strikes, waterspouts can range from the beach to mountainside lakes.
5. Double Rainbow
While double rainbows were made famous by double rainbow guy, you can still spot on for yourself after the storm clouds clear and the sun appears.
