When the weather turns practically perfect for a short day hike in North Carolina, you can't go wrong when you can get some elevation and enjoy both fresh air and magnificent views. If you're in the areas of Robbinsville or Bryson City, then hit the road to the trailhead for a trail that's oddly named Twentymile Loop. But don't worry... it's not even close to twenty miles long!
The trailhead for Twentymile Loop is found only a stone's throw from the Little Tennessee River and only a few miles below the Fontana Dam.
Hit the trail for an adventure that's filled with enchanting footbridges, creekside views of the water, and long range views of the surrounding terrain on the higher elevations of the loop.
In total, Twentymile Loop is a mere 7.8 miles, a distance easily covered in the span of a day. Enjoy all of the water crossings on this path. The bridges are especially charming and you'll want to linger and take photos before moving along.
It's estimated there are at least 18 water crossings on this hike. So prepare to be wowed. Note, most all of the crossings are spanned with foot logs like the one seen here. If there are flood conditions, then a footlog bridge or two may wash out and you'll need to wade across the water. Be warned, just in case.
The trail is inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which explains the wonderful water crossings. And the rest of the trail is also well maintained and well marked.
Expect to find a world of shade on a sunny day. The canopy high overhead also helps to keep the heat down on extra hot afternoons.
Arrive in the height of springtime to witness and explosion of wildflower blooms along this trail.
The loop of Twentymile has an overall elevation change (up and down combined) of 1,304 feet. You'll appreciate the climb when you see that long-range view of the Smoky Mountains!
