The highly regarded 'Dr. Beach,' AKA international beach expert Stephen Leatherman, has released his annual list compiling the best beaches in America and this year, Ocracoke's Lifeguard Beach has moved up the ranks to place third. The popular list is based on 50 criteria revolving around sand and water quality, environmental management, and utilities. Yet, this beach is used to the spotlight: last year it was named fourth and in 2007 received the title of 'Top Beach in America.'
Located just north of Ocracoke Village on the isolated yet beautiful Ocracoke Island, Lifeguard Beach is known for pristine white sand, gorgeous dunes, clean water and no commercial or high rise development in sight.
Lifeguard Beach is the first beach outside of Hawaii or Florida to ever reach the number one position on Dr. Beach's coveted list. Activities like surfing, kite boarding, parasailing and snorkeling are popular for adventurous beach-goers.
Even if you want to just kick back and relax, the half-mile long Lifeguard Beach stays mostly calm and unpopulated. Contrary to other bustling North Carolina beaches, you get a true paradise, worlds-away-from-it-all experience here.
If you find yourself on Ocracoke Island this summer, take advantage of both Lifeguard Beach and the vast expanse of history here. Ocracoke has deep pirate roots, including Teach's Hole where the infamous Blackbeard roamed, partied, and eventually met his demise. Ocracoke is also home to the second-oldest lighthouse operating in the U.S.
