Over in a valley 18 miles west of Murphy, North Carolina, is a forgotten gem begun some 80 years ago in 1941. It's now a theme park dedicated to Christianity. The site was first called Fields of the Wood by a Quaker bible salesman named A.J. Tomlinson, who would later become the first overseer of the Church of God. Before his death in 1943, Tomlinson inscribed in rock on the hillside here the ten commandments.
And they're still here. Today, the site is owned and operated by the Church of God of Prophecy. Admission is free.
Take a walk up Ten Commandment Mountain for a monumental inspiration.
You'll pass the bigger-than-life, five feet tall letters spelling out the ten commandments laid out on the side of the mountain as you ascend to what may possibly be the world's biggest bible.
In all, the open field displaying the ten commandments is 300 feet wide.
From the top, the view is both moving and exhilarating.
Just inside the gates of Fields of the Wood is Prayer Mountain.
Here, 29 markers laid out along 321 steps ascending to the top of the mountain spell out various bible teachings.
The theme park even has a baptismal pool.
It's found at the base of Prayer Mountain. Markers on either end describe the importance of baptism.
One of the most moving things found at Fields of the Wood is the replica garden tomb and Golgotha Hill.
Created to replicate the private tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea who claimed the body of Jesus and buried him in his own tomb, the Garden Tomb has a door that's always ajar.
Visitors to Fields of the Wood find inspiration in the unique larger than life and interactive attractions found in the theme park. The typical amount of time to set aside to experience it all is two and a half hours. Fields of the Wood is open year round from dawn to dusk. Imagine watching the sunrise from the top of Ten Commandment Mountain. Learn more about the park with a visit to its official website.
