Once the leaves reach their peak, we're all scrambling to find a way to view them before the season ends. The foliage seems to come and go in the blink of an eye, especially in higher elevation areas accustomed to dramatic shifts in temperature. Over the next three weeks, leaves will be reaching their peak in the High Country area of the Blue Ridge that consists of Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, and Grandfather Mountain. While plenty of people will hop on the Parkway and fight the crowd of cars for a view (can you blame them?) we're sharing a little secret to viewing foliage in the most relaxing way possible.
Located in beautiful Blowing Rock and situated at the base of Grandfather Mountain, Julian Price Memorial Park encompasses 4,300 acres with the gorgeous lake being the central figure and main attraction. Here, you'll find miles of different hiking trails winding you through the varying mountainous scenery as well as recreation like kayaking, canoeing or fishing. The park is named after Julian Price, a former insurance executive who purchased and donated the land as a retreat for his employees. The land was later donated to the Parkway.
Today this serene destination boasts plenty of hiking trails perfect for a day or weekend. The Price Lake Loop Trail is a 2.7-mile hike that circles you around the gorgeous lake and vistas this area is so well known for.
If you're up for a challenge, there's also some seriously strenuous yet rewarding hikes you can take here. One is the 13.5-mile Tanawha Trail. Described as, "ingeniously engineered" the trail passes under Linn Cove Viaduct then takes hikers on a journey through the southeastern ridge of Grandfather Mountain. A nice alternative for the intermediate explorer is the 5-mile Boone Fork Loop Trail which transports you straight into a woodsy environment and also opens up to clearings with vistas of Grandfather Mountain.
If you're seeking a little rest and relaxation, there are more than 100 picnic sites and a 300-seat amphitheater used for special events. Canoes are available for rent and kayaks are also a fun way to get around the small yet beautiful lake. You can glide on the water while taking in the magnificent foliage this area is so well-known for. If you're looking to pitch a tent and escape for a weekend, various camping sites throughout the park range from primitive to group sites with hookups, comfort stations, and shelters.
While Julian Price Park is gorgeous year-round, you really can't beat the views you're treated to when the leaves are at their peak season. This little-known destination is a hidden gem amongst more popular Parkway stop-offs and popular for both solo and group explorers. Throughout the season, the park also offers guided walks and campfire programs at night. Adjacent to Julian Price is Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. Together, the two form the largest area for recreation off the Parkway.
This is a trip you'll want to plan as soon as possible! I love the Blue Ridge Parkway but finding little escapes like this just makes me 'fall' more in love. Have you visited or camped here before?
