If there's one hike you place on a bucket list in Western North Carolina this year, make it the scenic figure-eight trail that loops through the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest near Robbinsville. It's no exaggeration to say the trees here are the biggest in the state, or that there are more varieties of massive old trees in one spot in this ancient forest than anywhere else in the Tar Heel State.
Hit the trail to discover the scenic wonders found within one of the largest contiguous old-growth forests in the U.S.
And marvel at the sheer size of the enormous trees you'll encounter along the way.
The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest boasts more than 100 tree species; some are more than 400 years old. It's not unusual to encounter trees that are more than 100 feet tall (think of a 10-story building!).
You'll find downed trees that have been left in a normal position as if they had fallen on their own. Imagine standing next to a downed tree that comes up to your waist or your shoulders!
The short two-mile looped trail winds through the forest and features a lovely stream filled with smooth, moss-covered boulders.
Even though the trail is considered easy by most accounts, you should know there are roots, and rocks — and stairs. If you have hiking sticks you'll likely be happy you have them along.
A restroom and picnic tables are located right at the trailhead at the edge of the parking lot.
