The mountains in Western North Carolina provide endless opportunities to get outside and connect with nature. And the state's westernmost state park (established in 1999 and also one of our newest), is a prime location for any memorable outdoor adventure. Open year-round, Gorges State Park near Sapphire is known for spectacular views, colossal waterfalls, and incredible hiking trails.
This state park boasts more than 20 miles of well-traveled trails ranging from short to long, and easy to strenuous. Our personal favorite is the trail to Rainbow Falls ‐ a 125-foot vertical drop sends water plummeting into a pool at the bottom and the view from the overlook is phenomenal!
If you continue on the same trail for another quarter mile, you'll find yourself at the famous Turtleback Falls, a notoriously popular swimming hole deep in the Dupont Forest.
Other trails, like the Foothill Trails, are much longer journeys. After wrapping through the backwoods of Gorge State Park, this trail drops down near Jocassee Lake and crosses over the Toxaway River.

Gorges State Park is located at 976 Grassy Ridge Rd., Sapphire, NC 28774. It's open year-round; hours may vary be season. The official website for North Carolina State Parks currently lists park and amenity hours as follows: General Park Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Picnic Areas 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Visitor Center Hours: Monday through Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
There are plenty of state parks in North Carolina convenient to our biggest cities. But for those up for a little bit of a drive, the small town state parks have just as much to offer, and depending on what you're looking for, even more opportunities for adventure. Today's feature destination, Morrow Mountain State Park, represents everything we love about the North Carolina outdoors: the mountains, the water, and ample opportunity to admire nature.
Tucked away about 50 miles away from Charlotte in Stanly County, Morrow Mountain State Park is a well-loved destination for all kinds of outdoor activities. There are two stunning natural wonders within the park: Morrow Mountain and Lake Tillery. The mountain itself is a geological marvel, containing both argillite that was mined by the Civilian Conservation Corps (and used to build many of the park's structure) as well as rhyodacite that was used by Native Americans.
Hiking is a wonderful way to experience the park's diverse natural beauty. The Morrow Mountain Trail is the most popular in the park, clocking in at five miles. It's a moderately challenging hike, mostly because of the nearly 800 feet in elevation gain. This, however, is what affords the breathtaking views. The trail itself is well-marked, though you will want a pair of sturdy hiking boots to navigate the incline and rocky terrain.
There's something else this lovely park is known for, and it's a fascinating slice of history. The swimming pool at Morrow Mountain State Park was built sometime between 1937 - 1942; in other words, it's the only swimming pool in the state park system built by the CCC. For generations, this day-use pool has been a welcome site for visitors from all over. Of course, it's only open seasonally, so you'll have to visit in the summer to take part in this historic feature.
There are plenty of campsites for those who wish to spend more than an afternoon enjoying all that the park has to offer. Be just to make a reservation before your camping adventure.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
