We know that when out-of-staters hear of New York, their minds typically jump straight to the Big Apple, but there's so much beauty to the Empire State outside of New York City. There is a multitude of outdoor spots for nature lovers to enjoy in New York. We've got one that is an absolute paradise for anyone looking to get in touch with the natural side of New York: Wildwood State Park in Suffolk County. The beach is breathtaking and offers a great place to get out and relax for a day (or two!), and there are lots of trails for those who prefer to be out hiking.
Wildwood State Park is a 767-acre park on Long Island's north shore. The most popular part of the park is the beach on Long Island Sound.
The park has acres upon acres of undeveloped hardwood forest that end on a high bluff that looks out onto Long Island Sound.

You'll feel miles away from it all as you listen to the waves crash upon the rocky shore.
There isn't much in life that's more relaxing than listening to the sounds of the ocean.
The beach is extremely rocky, so you'll want to wear appropriate water shoes and watch where you step!
The views on the beach at sunset and sunrise are absolutely incredible.
The park also has a campground and many miles of trails, so you can even stay for several days if you so desire!

In the summer, lots of people come to Fair Haven Beach State Park to enjoy its 1,500-foot sandy beach. The water gradually gets deeper, so it's safe for families - kids can splash in the shallow parts, while adults can swim in the deeper areas.
The beach is split by Sterling Pond's outlet, connected by a footbridge. The smaller western beach has more amenities, including a life-guarded swimming area, while the larger eastern beach is quieter. Both have restrooms and washrooms.
That said, in the western part of the beach, you'll find a playground, a pavilion, places to buy snacks, boardwalks, and more. You can also find picnic tables and grills all around the park, with more of them past the beach on the east side.
Don't forget about Sterling Pond! It's a peaceful spot where you can go fishing, paddle around, and watch the birds. You can rent canoes, kayaks, and even bikes there too, so you don't have to worry about bringing your own stuff.
Hiking is also a favorite family-friendly activity. After a day of sitting in the sand, check out the Lake Shore Trail. This trail takes you to a quiet rocky beach with spectacular views of the lake...
... and though this rocky beach is less frequented, it's worth the adventure despite the insects near Sterling Marsh. I mean, look at that!

Lastly, don't miss the bluffs - drumlins that have worn down over centuries from Lake Ontario's strong waves.
Whether you view them from afar, on a boat, or via a trail - they are quite the sight to see.
