As many fantastic state parks and trails as there are scattered throughout New York, there's an extra element of adventure when you know there's a good chance of seeing some wildlife during your trek. If that's one of the goals for your next weekend adventure, Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is worth checking out. There are a variety of trails to explore in this gorgeous region, all of them full of opportunities to spot white-tailed deer, otters, foxes, and more. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Iroquois National Wildlife refuge in western New York encompasses almost 11,000 acres of swamps, meadows, and woodlands, and is one of the best areas in the region to observe all kinds of wildlife.
The preserve's Kanyoo Trail is a great loop trail for any and all hikers and is only 1.1 miles long. Feel free to explore this path with your dog as well!
Observe white-tailed deer roaming the wildlife refuge and turtles sunbathing on the lake. Visitors might also catch a glimpse of otters, foxes, or even a bald eagle.
Hit the Swallow Hollow Trail to experience this gorgeous wilderness from a series of boardwalks that overlook the marshes.
The preserve is also designated as an Important Bird Area and is an ideal destination for birdwatchers looking for a vast, peaceful space to explore forest life.
The preserve is within an hour drive of Rochester, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls. If you're in one of those cities, don't miss out on the opportunity to explore this unique natural area.
For a little bit longer hike, check out the 2.2-mile Onondaga Nature Trail, an easy and popular trek for leisurely hiking and birdwatching!
Overall, the numerous hiking trails, rich greenery, and access to all kinds of wildlife make this beautiful western New York preserve a nature lover's paradise.
For a longer hike at the refuge, explore the 3.5-mile Feeder Road, accessible via the Kanyoo Trail parking lot. Or check out the HQ Trail just off Casey Road.
