Full of fascinating history and mind-blowing wonders, the Empire State is an extraordinary place to explore. You may remember us talking about New York's enchanting aboveground cave that features a 30-foot waterfall inside, but did you know there's also an underground cave that has its own waterfall as well? Leading you to a spectacular sight, this roadside attraction is one that's not easily missed.
You might imagine it to be difficult to find an underground cave, but with electrifying signs like this? There's no way you'll get lost on the way to Secret Caverns.
A natural wonder of Schoharie County, Secret Caverns attracts visitors with its colorful and quirky appearance.
Step inside the attraction's shop and the wild but informative signs will continue on, sharing pieces of history that you never knew about.
Before making your way underground you'll see another sign that will catch your eye, showing you where the cave was originally discovered by cows Floyd and Lucky after they fell through the 85-foot deep hole back in 1928.
Open to visitors since 1929, you'll make your way down a total of 103 stairs that you'll hear being referred to as a petrified escalator.
Once you reach the bottom of the staircase you'll start your journey down a cement pathway that's a half-mile long.
While some areas of the cave are darker than others, there's no need to be afraid! You'll find that things here are well-lit.
Unlike most underground attractions, visitors of Secret Caverns are allowed to touch the unique formations and bring cameras with them on this adventure.
Generally taking around an hour to complete, the guided tour will bring you past things like wishing wells...
And even formations that resemble animals that you'd never hope to stumble upon underground.
All year long the underground passageway has a temperature of 50 degrees, so wearing a jacket is highly encouraged for this journey!
At the very end you'll find your favorite feature of the cave, the 100-foot tall waterfall that will leave you speechless.
Saving the best for last, this particular New York waterfall is one that's amazing to see in person.
There are handfuls of waterfalls and natural wonders that you can get to without hiking, but sometimes the adventure to get to these places is where the majority of the fun lies! Making your way down a historic staircase and through and underground passageway to reach one of our waterfalls? It doesn't get much better than that. This unforgettable experience is one that's great for all ages.
