Buffalo may be one of New York's biggest cities, but it happens to be surrounded by nature. From the major natural wonders like Niagara Falls to the smaller picturesque parks, there are numerous ways to enjoy the great outdoors here, and if you make a quick 48-mile drive from Buffalo, you'll find yourself at the beautiful Genesee County Park and Forest.
You'll find this forest and park at 11095 Bethany Center Road in East Bethany, just under an hour's drive from Buffalo.
This is the oldest county forest in the state.
The land was purchased in 1882 and the forest was established in 1915.
By 1935, over 169,000 trees had been planted here to help supplement the forest.
As a result, you've got this little piece of paradise perfect for escaping the chaos of the city for a while.
In the winter, you can enjoy guided moonlit hikes with a local naturalist...
...and in the spring and summer, numerous races and events are hosted here.
There are over 10 miles of trails, some of which are boardwalks.
And if you're lucky, you just might spot some wildlife.
We're truly lucky to have such a magical place so close to Buffalo.
The Genesee County Parks Department website has more information on the events throughout the year.
We love our wonderful parks system here in Buffalo. For a peaceful escape that's a little closer to home, check out Walton Woods.
