Living in New Orleans, hiking isn't usually the first thing that comes to mind when you're looking for something to do. But that would be a mistake. There are some exceptional places to hike around New Orleans--and this one is the absolute best!
Jean Lafitte National Park has a few locations, but it's the Barataria Preserve that has the best hike.
Taking the palmetto trail, the marsh overlook is an awesome way to spend the day.
Most of the trail is boardwalks, allowing you to get up close and personal with the nature here.
You can find these hikes by traveling to 6588 Barataria Boulevard in Marrero, LA.
It's pretty common to spy alligators along the way.
And there are some awesome interpretive signs to educate you about the natural areas here.
And if you're really lucky you'll spy an owl here.
Eventually as you travel you'll get closer to the big finale.
The marsh overlook.
But don't stop looking out for the wildlife--there are some really gorgeous specimens.
This gulf fritillary butterfly is one of the special insects you can check out here.
And eventually you'll reach the Marsh Overlook--and it is simply breathtaking.
It's an awesome place to take pictures and just soak in the gorgeous nature here.
