There's nothing like spending time in nature to disconnect with the outside world. There's truly something so magical about being out in nature, especially if you can disconnect from others and the outside world for a few hours. It's so therapeutic to recharge and reset your mind, body, and soul with a hike or a visit to a park. Do you feel this sometimes? I sure do, so that's why I have suggested the following New Mexico trails and parks that are among the quietest in the state.
1. Cooney Canyon Trail
How amazing would it be not just to have a trail to yourself but a waterfall? Well, there's a strong possibility you can experience just that when you take a hike along the Cooney Canyon Tail. Located within the Gila National Forest by Glenwood, NM, this 5.3-mile, out-and-back trail will take over 2 hours to complete. In addition to a waterfall, you'll be able to explore slot canyons, abandoned mining camps, and extraordinary rugged and wild landscapes.
2. Alien Run Recreation Area
With a name like Alien Run, you'd expect this recreation area to be located by Roswell. Well, its home is actually in Northern New Mexico about 45 minutes northeast of Farmington. However, it's named "Alien" as a UFO was rumored to have crashed in the area. While the trails are great for mountain biking, they are also incredible for a long hike in near-solitude. Along the way, you may see alien art made with rocks that other visitors have left behind.
3. Fort Craig National Historic Site
When I go hiking, I prefer there to be a point of interest along the way, especially if I have my kids with me. For a family-friendly hike in New Mexico, Fort Craig National Historic Site has an easy one-mile loop path with ruins of an abandoned fort, one of the most important Western forts in the mid-19th century. Take a walk around this underrated historic site and learn more about the fort from the interpretive signage.
4. Pena Blanca
Another place you're unlikely to see many people as you explore is along the Pena Blanca Trail within Organ Mountain - Desert Peaks National Monument by Las Cruces. The 2.4-mile, easy out-and-back trail is ideal if you want to have all sorts of gorgeous scenery, as well as caves, to yourself. And bring the kids along — this is a great way to get them to explore the great outdoors of New Mexico.
5. Dragon's Back Trail
For a moderately challenging hike near San Ysidro, New Mexico, the 7.2-mile, out-and-back Dragon's Back Trail can't be beaten. With sweeping views of the desert from the ridgeline, you might find this to be one of the most beautiful hikes in the state. Keep in mind that there's no cover to shade you from the sun, so bring plenty of water and sun protection as well.
