This isolated area of the park used to be the homestead of William Henry Harrison.
Harrison created the Harrison ditch system which you'll see surrounding the spring. When Harrison died, the park service took over the system to provide water to the park.
The spring and surrounding area were developed around WWII as well.
During WWII, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp was built at these very springs. While these structures were torn down in the '50s, you'll see a few buildings that were later built by the park service.
Nowadays, Rattlesnake Springs near Carlsbad, New Mexico is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a true refuge in the Chihuahuan Desert.
