While this may look like an arch you would find in the famous Arches National Park in Utah, this is actually Cox Canyon Arch located in Aztec, New Mexico. Aztec can be found in the northwest corner of the state, very close to the Colorado border, and if you find yourself in the area, you just have to stop by for this great hike.
The Cox Canyon Arch trail is very short, clocking in at under 1/2 a mile round trip. This means that you can get to the arch in just about five minutes. However, there is a lot of elevation gain in this short hike, so make sure you are prepared to work!
The arch is simply incredible. Not only is it huge, seeing the mountains and the bright blue New Mexico desert sky behind the arch gives you such a scenic view.
If you are looking to extend your hike, you can also take the Equestrian Trails around Cox Canyon. This trail is a 5-mile loop that will take you past the beautiful Cox Canyon Arch, but will also let you enjoy more of the surrounding scenery and rock formations.
There are lots of areas around the arch to explore as well. There is a small cave that you can find close by, and is great for exploring.
The arch has also been called the Anasazi Arch, and while there are many small and medium arches in this area around Aztec, New Mexico, the Cox Canyon Arch is considered to be the best by most visitors.
Someone has also put up a tire swing on the trail to Cox Canyon Arch, making this a great place to hang out for a picnic and enjoy the outdoors with a great view.
Cox Canyon Arch is a short and easy hike that will take you to this amazing arch that will make you think you are in Arches National Park! Have you hiked to any other arches?
