The 35 state parks in New Mexico are a treasure trove of historical and recreational activities. The diverse landscapes of our beautiful state parks include deserts, mountains, lakes, and rivers. You can hike, bike, ride horses, boat, and even see dinosaur tracks during an adventure to a state park. While all of our parks are spectacular in their own way, Caballo Lake State Park offers a little-known spot that is out of the way and off the beaten path. Plan a getaway to this southwest New Mexican oasis; you'll practically have this gem all to yourself!
Caballo Lake State Park is 16 miles south of Truth or Consequences and the much more popular Elephant Butte Lake State Park.
The lake was formed in the 1930s when a dam was built across the Rio Grande river. Now it's the perfect spot for fishing, swimming, and boating.
Caballo Lake State Park has two campgrounds. One on the banks of Caballo Lake and one on the shores of the Rio Grand River. You have 170 campsites to choose from that can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs.
Explore the many little coves in a kayak or a canoe. Pack a cooler and spend the day relaxing on the sandy beach, or cast a line and try for Largemouth Bass.
The Caballo Mountains create a gorgeous backdrop for the lake. You'll love the spectacular high desert sunrises and sunsets when you stay at the campground.
Exploring the many State Parks in New Mexico is a great way to get to know all that the Land of Enchantment offers. Make sure to include the little know Caballo Lake State Park on your bucket list.
