The Land of Enchantment truly is enchanting. Luckily, you don't have to spend a single penny to enjoy many of the natural beauties in New Mexico. These incredible sights are free to visit and explore. Here are just seven of the natural wonders in New Mexico that will keep money in your pocket and create a day full of memories.

1. Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, Near Farmington

When you visit the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, you will feel like you’ve stepped onto an alien planet. Located in northern New Mexico, this area features some of the strangest rock formations that are made from sandstone, shale, coal, silt, and mudstone. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time when visiting this area to explore. However, always bring your own water and food as there are no services available.

2. Paliza Goblin Colony, Ponderosa

After a 3-mile moderate hike north of the Paliza Family Campground in the Santa Fe National Forest, you’ll come to the Paliza Goblin Colony. These unique volcanic rock formations aren’t like others that you will find around the Land of Enchantment. These rocks have eroded holes, making them appear as a large family of goblins. Even young children will love to search for the goblins in the area.

3. Red Rock Park, Church Rock

Red Rock Park, located in Church Rock, is a true natural wonder. This park is covered with beautiful red cliffs that create some incredible views. You can spend some time exploring this park, staying in the Red Rock Campground, or visiting the museum. You'll want to pack your hiking shoes as there are incredible trails that will take you to the most breathtaking rock formations in the park. However, be aware that while visiting this park is free, there may be small fees for camping and other activities.

4. Rio Grande River

If you’ve spent any time near the Rio Grande River, you’ll be amazed at its majesty and power. This river travels more than 1,900 miles and through some of the most remote areas of northern New Mexico. This river is perfect for kayaking, rafting, fishing, and just enjoying a little peace and quiet.

5. Shiprock Monument, Shiprock

Shiprock is one of the most popular natural wonders in New Mexico and rightly so. This large rock formation can be seen for miles and it creates stunning landscapes. It is a sacred landmark to the Navajo tribe and it is known by the Navajo people as "Tsé Bit’ a’í", or rock with wings. Due to the sacred nature of this rock formation, climbing and hiking the monument are not allowed. However, you can still visit from a distance and enjoy its magnificent beauty.

6. Soda Dam, Jemez Springs

Jemez Springs Soda Dam is not only beautiful but it is old — like really old. The Soda Dam is estimated to be more than 7,000 years old. The Dam consists of more than a dozen hot springs that have formed a beautiful natural bridge over the water. You do have a short, easy hike to reach this incredible natural wonder in New Mexico. 7. El Malpais National Monument, Grants

The unique lava flow at El Malpais is a remarkable sight. Not only will you see a large sea of black lava rock, but there is also other remarkable scenery in the area. While visiting this national monument, hike on one of incredible trails, explore a lava tube cave, or just soak in the beauty of the area on a scenic drive.
