The best hikes in New Mexico will take you to incredible views. However, the Crater Vent Trail, an easy trail in the Land of Enchantment, will take you someplace unique — to the bottom of a volcanic crater.
The Crater Vent Trail is located at Capulin Volcano National Monument.
The Capulin Volcano is an extinct cinder-cone volcano and is located in the northeastern area of New Mexico. It is believed this volcano erupted 56,000 years to 62,000 years ago.
While there are several hiking trails at the Capulin Volcano National Monument, the Crater Vent Trail is one that is perfect for the entire family.
The Crater Vent Trail is a 0.3-mile out-and-back hiking trail that is rated easy.
This hiking trail is paved and you only climb 100 feet, making it the perfect short trail.
As you walk, spend a few moments taking in the incredible view of lava rock and vegetation.
Read more about the geology and the history of the area with the educational signs along your path. These signs not only make the journey fascinating, but educational as well.
At the end of the trail, you will find yourself at the bottom of Capulin’s Crater. Take a look around and imagine what this area was like thousands of years ago.
