While hiking in the Land of Enchantment is plentiful, the best views are always at the end of the hardest hikes. This particular hike in the Cibola National Forest will take some effort, though anyone who is moderately skilled should be able to take on the challenge. Lace up your boots, pack some water, and get ready to take on a challenging hike that has the most incredible payoff at the end. Once you finish this hike, you'll have lost your breath from the views alone.
Welcome to Cienega Trail #148 in the Cibola National Forest, near Sandia Peak. If you head east from Albuquerque, this trail is only a short drive within the Sandia Mountain Wilderness.
This hike within the Cienega Canyon is home to some incredible views, but also rough terrain. At 4.3 miles long, this isn't a short out-and-back hike.
The word "Cienega" is Spanish for 'wet meadow,' and this hike is full of lush meadows and flowers to view throughout. Spring and Fall are the best time to see the wildflowers.
This out-and-back trail is by no means easy. There are many thick bushes and trees to weed through, and you'll gain over 1,700 feet in elevation.
If you're looking for a way to access Crest Trail and keep heading upwards, this trail is often used as the main route to get there.
However, if this is the only trail you'll be hiking, you'll still be rewarded with plenty of jaw-dropping views.
Even though this trail is mostly shaded, be sure to bring water and wear proper hiking gear. If you're heading all the way up and back down, that's nearly nine miles of beautiful New Mexico hiking.
Cienega Trail #148 might be a challenging hike, but with a payoff like this, it's well worth the effort. Bring a camera and celebrate your accomplishment!
