If there's one site that sums up New Jersey's outsized role in American history, it's Morristown National Historical Park. This sprawling complex of indoor and outdoor sites dates back to the American Revolution and features hiking trails and restorations of some of the buildings from the era. It's a massive institution that just celebrated 90 years, and it has so many places to explore that many people don't even know it's home to the most historic garden in New Jersey. I was blown away when I got my first look at Cross Estate Garden, a beautiful site containing a wide array of plant life as well as historic buildings. It's been operated by the National Park Service since 1975 after spending most of the 20th century as a private residence, and that means it's open for visitors to witness the beauty and history.
Cross Estate Garden is a unique combination of a historic site and a public green space, with free admission through the year.
The garden contains both formal and native plant gardens, and is filled with small paths that contain plenty of places to sit and reflect.
The plants change through the year, meaning every visit is a different and completely new experience.
The plants aren't the only atrraction - the architecture around the historic gardens is seriously beautiful and dates back to 1903 in some places.
Around the garden, you'll see many remnants of the people who lived here over the last century.
The most famous site is definitely the water tower, which was one of the first structures built here and served as a windmill.
Totally free and always open, this historic site is the perfect spot to come to beat the crowds and take in a small slice of New Jersey's culture and beauty.
