New Jersey is home to a whole host of scenic waterfront restaurants, many of which serve up spectacular seafood. Still, one stands out. It's an iconic Jersey Shore destination and a favorite among tourists and locals alike. It actually offers several different dining experiences, each something special.
The Lobster House has been a Cape May staple for decades.
It has changed a bit over the years, but we think it's only gotten better.
Patrons can relax in the rustic dining room...
Or they can grab a bite on the deck!
Either way, you'll be right on the water, looking out on the lovely Schellenger Creek and Cape May Harbor.
It's picture perfect at sunset!
The Lobster House offers a retail/wholesale fish market and a takeout menu.
The fish market serves up the freshest and most complete offering of seafood you are likely to encounter in Southern New Jersey. In addition to fresh fare landed by the commercial boats at their own dock, seafood is freshly imported daily from all over the world. Perhaps one of the best fish market offerings is the Clam Bake. Each Clam Bake includes 2 Live Lobsters, 18 Shrimp, 18 Clams, and 18 Mussels - it can be shipped safely overnight to anywhere in the U.S.The take out shop makes enjoying amazing seafood on the go possible - you can even place your order in advance. The menu offers soups, salads, sandwiches, fried seafood dishes, and more. You can bring your meal home or take advantage of a self serve seating area.
And there's a raw bar that just opened for the season.
The Raw Bar dining room has the feel of an authentic waterfront boathouse and is filled with historic memorabilia from the fishing days of Cape May’s past. The menu includes raw clams and oysters, their Famous Crab Soup, hard shell crabs, lobster, burgers, sandwiches, and salads. A wide variety of beer is available on tap by the pint or pitcher, as well as bottled beer, wine and soft drinks.
Then, there's the Schooner American...
An iconic 130 ft. Grand Banks sailing vessel and outdoor cocktail lounge, The Schooner American is moored alongside the Lobster House. A fixture at this culinary institution since 1965, topside on the Schooner is an unparalleled destination for cocktails and lunch with lighter fare during the dinner hours, all while enjoying the breathtaking view of passing boats on Cape May Harbor. Free dockage alongside the schooner is available to patrons arriving by boat on a first come/first serve basis. The schooner is open seasonally from May-October. Menu favorites include the clam bar and char-broiled burgers.
Of course, there's the Lobster House proper.
I had to use this Christmastime shot because it exemplifies how warm and welcoming this restaurant is. All year long, patrons gush about the service. Open all year, there are five picturesque dining rooms to enjoy. There are also areas for private parties. While there's something for everyone on the menu...
The seafood is sublime!
You'll find an extensive menu that includes everything from spicy steamed shrimp to barbecued clams. You can get tuna, lobster, or shrimp melts, crab cake sandwiches and flounder francaise. Then, there's lobster bisque and a variety of seafood salads. Of course, you can also find filet mignon and French cut chicken, along with grilled cheese and chicken fingers for the little ones.
