New Jersey may not be known for its clear, blue water but we do have a stunning sapphire lake that's impossible not to love. The lake was formed in 1960 with the creation of a dam and now it is a popular destination for summer fun.
Round Valley Reservoir is located in Clinton, New Jersey.
The 2,350-acre lake is among the deepest in New Jersey, reaching depths of 180 feet.
Know for its clear, blue water, the reservoir is a popular scuba diving destination.
The bottom of the lake still contains bricks and foundations from the buildings destroyed when the valley was flooded to create the reservoir.
Usually a vibrant sapphire or turquoise hue, the water is very reflective and will pick up shades from the sky.
The reservoir offers boating, a swimming beach and numerous hiking trails surrounding it.
The recreation area surrounding the reservoir offers true wilderness camping along the eastern shores.
To reach your campsite, you will need to hike or boat - there is no vehicle access. Pit toilets and drinking water are available within walking distance.
However, you can enjoy modern conveniences including a picnic area, restrooms and a snack and swim shop on the western side of the lake.
The reservoir is open all year, offering seasonal activities like fishing and sledding. A small entrance fee is charged per vehicle from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
