Newark is New Jersey's largest city, and a great hub of dining and culture. But surprisingly, hiding within it is one of New Jersey's most beautiful parks. This isn't a state park, but it has a unique distinction - it's the very first county park ever founded in the United States, way back in 1895. Today, Branch Brook Park is known throughout the country for being one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in full bloom, but there is so much more to see and do here. This is a beautiful, sprawling park with some amazing architecture and historic buildings, as well as some surprising amenities and features you can't find anywhere else. Read on to discover why this historic city park is the perfect place to visit on a sunny summer afternoon.
Branch Brook Park is a hidden natural haven in the middle of Newark.
This century-plus old park is busiest during the spring, when its cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. There's even an associated festival!
The park is known for its beautiful fountains, as well as for its unique historic sculptures paying tribute to famous residents who played a key role in NJ history.
There are several unique educational exhibits here, including a small museum dedicated to the cherry blossoms that helped put this park on the map.
One of the most famous sites at the park is the gorgeous visage of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, located just outside the park and very much part of the environment.
There are two small trails on the park grounds, both loop trails between 2.1 and 4.6 miles. Both are easy and well-maintained routes worth traveling.
There's even an indoor skating rink on the grounds! Run by United Skates of America, it has an additional charge but is a great option on a rainy day.
Walking this park is a uniquely Newark way to spend a summer day, and we bet you'll discover something new every single time you visit.
