This week, several New Jersey swimming lakes have been shut down due to Cyanobacteria blooms. The bacteria is dangerous to ingest or even touch and can cause rashes, flu-like symptoms, gastric distress, and liver and kidney issues. These blooms put a damper on our July 4th plans but there may be something worse in the water...
Meningitis-causing fecal bacteria.
The bacteria, known as Enterococci, can cause serious infections including urinary tract infections, bacteremia, bacterial endocarditis, diverticulitis and meningitis. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. An infection can be fatal. Because of this, environmental officials have issued advisories for three New Jersey beaches with high levels of Enterococci bacteria. These beaches are Bennett Avenue in Wildwood City, Lavender Road in Wildwood Crest and East 10th Avenue in North Wildwood. With Wildwood's free beaches and Fourth of July fireworks, it is expected that many will be affected by the advisory. The elevated level of fecal bacteria may have been caused by a wastewater treatment malfunction at the Seven-Mile Treatment Center yesterday. While the beaches are not currently closed, it is advised that beachgoers exercise caution.
